Alongside West Street (SH 1) and Walnut Ave is the Ashburton Domain. It is often referred to as the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ of Ashburton and very much a community asset. Over the years, since the inception of the Domain in 1883, a number of community service organisations and groups have helped with its development. This 37.54 hectare park is a significant open space area within walking distance from the commercial area of Ashburton. It caters for a large number of different groups, with 16 hectares in lawns, trees and gardens with the remaining 21 hectares used for active recreational sport.
It is known for its many established trees and in many cases some of the finest specimens you will see anywhere. To complement these large trees are collections of maples, magnolias, conifers, deciduous azaleas, rhododendrons, lilacs and roses also with a variety of colourful annual beds.
The Domain has a comprehensive playground and a paddling pool, two barbeque areas and plenty of picnic spots.
The Ashburton Domain is at its most colourful time during spring and summer/ autumn, with many people taking advantages of this for their wedding photos or family portraits.
In short there is something for everyone.
This is owned by the Ashburton District Council
